Mullein

Posted on January 31, 2021September 22, 2026 By Repamp Ghana

Mullein (Verbascum thapsus)

Mullein is a plant that has been recognized for centuries in traditional herbal practices. With more than 200 species found worldwide, the most commonly used type is common mullein (Verbascum thapsus). The plant grows in many regions, including the United States, and its leaves and flowers have historically been prepared in teas, oils, and other herbal products.

About Mullein Oil

Mullein oil is typically prepared from the flowers or leaves of the plant. Traditional methods include:

  • Hot oil infusion: gently heating mullein with a carrier oil such as olive oil for several hours, then straining and storing.
  • Cold-steeped oil: soaking dried flowers or leaves in a carrier oil for several days before straining.

This oil has been used in folk traditions for skin applications and ear drops. While some small studies have suggested potential benefits, more research is needed to confirm its safety and effectiveness.

Traditional Uses

Historically, mullein has been used in herbal practices for a wide range of purposes, including:

  • Supporting respiratory comfort (such as coughs and congestion)
  • Soothing the skin
  • General wellness and relaxation

By the late 1800s, mullein was even used in Europe and North America as a popular herbal preparation for people with tuberculosis. Today, it continues to be included in teas, extracts, oils, powders, and capsules offered by herbal practitioners.

Compounds Found in Mullein

Laboratory studies have identified several naturally occurring compounds in mullein, including:

  • Saponins – studied for their anti-inflammatory properties
  • Flavonoids – known for antioxidant activity
  • Phenylethanoid glycosides – investigated for antiviral and antioxidant potential
  • Iridoids – studied for anti-inflammatory effects

These compounds may help explain why mullein has been valued in traditional herbal medicine, though clinical evidence in humans remains limited.

Research Insights

  • Antiviral activity: Some laboratory studies suggest mullein extracts may have activity against influenza A and herpes viruses.
  • Antibacterial activity: Research has shown mullein leaf extracts may act against certain bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli.

It is important to note that these findings are from laboratory studies. Human clinical trials are needed to determine whether mullein has practical medical applications.

Important Considerations

  • Mullein is available in many forms, including teas, oils, capsules, and creams.
  • While it has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, scientific evidence is not yet sufficient to confirm its effectiveness for medical conditions.
  • Anyone considering mullein should consult a qualified healthcare provider, especially if they have existing health conditions or are taking medications.
