The kinkeliba plant is a shrub that is native to West Africa. It belongs to the Combretaceae family and its scientific name is Combretum micranthum. The plant grows in arid land and can measure from 2 to 5 meters, often gathered in bushes. It has leathery, dark green leaves and small, white flowers that grow in a spike. The plant’s fruit is a samare.

Health Benefits of Kinkeliba Plant

Kinkeliba plant has the following health benefits:

  • Detoxifying and diuretic: Kinkeliba helps to cleanse the liver and kidneys, and promotes the elimination of toxins and excess fluids from the body.
  • Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory: Kinkeliba contains polyphenols and flavonoids that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which can protect the cells from oxidative stress and inflammation.

Chemical composition of Kinkeliba

Kinkeliba plant contains a range of polyphenol compounds, which are known for their antioxidant activities and have shown potential for the prevention of diabetes. The plant leaf extract has been demonstrated to contain these compounds. The chemical profiling of kinkeliba from different regions in Senegal has been studied, and the results showed that the plant contains catechins and glycosyl flavones.

How to use the Kinkeliba plant

kinkeliba plant is mainly used to make an herbal tea called kinkeliba, which is widely consumed in West African countries for its flavour, nutritional and medicinal properties. The dried leaves of the plant are used to make the tea, which can be consumed hot or cold. Here is a simple recipe to make kinkeliba tea:

  1. Boil 1 litre of water in a pot.
  2. Add 2-3 tablespoons of dried kinkeliba leaves to the boiling water.
  3. Let it simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Strain the tea and pour it into a cup.
  5. Add honey or lemon juice to taste (optional).

Kinkeliba tea is said to have various health benefits, such as lowering blood pressure, improving digestion, detoxifying the liver, boosting immunity, reducing inflammation, and preventing infections. It is also known as the “health tree” or the “infusion of long life” in some cultures
