Healing Power of the Yohimbe (Pausinystalia johimbe) Plant

Yohimbe (Pausinystalia johimbe)
Yohimbe (Pausinystalia johimbe)

Yohimbe is an African evergreen tree called the Pausinystalia johimbe. It is commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction and has become a growing trend among bodybuilders to help with fat loss.

Yohimbe is believed to work by blocking alpha-2 adrenergic receptors, which plays an important role in inhibiting erections. Therefore, yohimbine is thought to help alleviate erectile dysfunction by blocking the receptors responsible for preventing erections.

Yohimbine may also promote the release of nitric oxide, which could lead to the dilation of blood vessels and an increase in blood flow to sexual organs.

However, certain health risks are associated with taking Yohimbe supplements, and it’s not recommended for everyone

Some health benefits of the Yohimbe plant are:

  • Improving erectile dysfunction: Yohimbe bark extract or yohimbine, the active ingredient in yohimbe, may help treat erectile dysfunction by blocking alpha-2 adrenergic receptors and increasing blood flow to sexual organs. However, the evidence is not conclusive and the side effects may outweigh the benefits.
  • Enhancing athletic performance: Yohimbe may increase energy levels, alertness and blood circulation, which could improve exercise performance and endurance. However, there is not enough research to support this claim and the safety of Yohimbe for athletes is uncertain.
  • Aiding weight loss: Yohimbe may stimulate the breakdown of fat and suppress appetite, which could help with weight loss. However, the effect is likely to be small and the potential risks may be high.
  • Treating other conditions: Yohimbe has been used for various medical conditions, such as angina, high blood pressure, diabetic neuropathy and depression. However, there is not enough scientific evidence to support the effectiveness or safety of Yohimbe in these conditions

Chemical composition of the Yohimbe plant

The bark of the tree contains various chemical compounds, mainly alkaloids, that have pharmacological and psychoactive effects. According to the web search results, the main phytochemical in the bark extract is the indoloquinolizidine alkaloid yohimbine, which is used as an aphrodisiac and to treat impotence. Yohimbine also has other effects on the cardiovascular and nervous systems, such as increasing blood pressure and heart rate and causing anxiety and insomnia. Other alkaloids found in the bark include corynanthine and raubasine, which have undefined properties and may interact with yohimbine. The chemical composition of the Yohimbe plant is not fully understood and may vary depending on the source and quality of the bark.

How to Use the Yohimbe Plant

It is traditionally used as an aphrodisiac and to boost general health as well as athletic performance.

Yohimbe can be consumed in many different ways, depending on your preferences. You can consume Yohimbe as a pill, tea, supplement, or even powder or capsule. If you’re unsure of how to take it, ask your doctor for advice on which method is right for you.

If you want to start Yohimbe, it is recommended to start with a capsule per day (1 pill) or half of one capsule if you’re sensitive to stimulants or new to supplements such as yohimbine HCL.

Please note that Yohimbe is not suitable for everyone and may cause side effects such as anxiety, high blood pressure, and rapid heart rate.

It is important to consult your doctor before taking Yohimbe, especially if you have any underlying medical conditions or are taking any medication

Some of the potential side effects of Yohimbe include:

  • Gastrointestinal problems: Yohimbe can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach cramps in some people
  • Cardiovascular problems: Yohimbe can increase blood pressure, heart rate, and the risk of heart attack or stroke, especially in people with pre-existing heart conditions.
  • Psychological problems: Yohimbe can cause anxiety, agitation, irritability, and insomnia, especially in high doses or sensitive individuals.
  • Allergic reactions: Yohimbe can cause allergic reactions in some people, especially those who are allergic to tree pollen or other plants in the same family.
  • Interactions with medications: Yohimbe can interact with many medications, such as antidepressants, antihypertensives, blood thinners, and stimulants, and cause adverse effects or reduce their effectiveness.

Therefore, it is advisable to consult with a doctor before taking Yohimbe supplements, especially if you have any health issues or concerns.
